Drawing on their professional background and experience in addiction assessment and treatment, authors Douglas A. Quirk and Reg M. Reynolds detail a multi-year project to understand the motivations underlying addiction to alcohol and various street drugs, and the development of a simple and effective approach to their treatment and possible prevention.  In this book, they describe the results of a successful treatment program that was carried out at the Ontario Correctional Institute, a correctional treatment center for alcoholics, drug abusers and sex offenders.  “Addiction is not complicated,” the authors state.  “It is self-medication for psychosocial problems. Effective treatment alleviates the compulsive drug-taking behaviour and allows the individual to live addiction-free.”
